How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
In our own checks of Washington towns, when ChatGPT recommended trade businesses, 83% of what it cited was the businesses' own websites. A clear site that says what you do, where, and shows your reviews is the biggest thing you can do.
What we found
We ask ChatGPT every day, the way homeowners do, who to call for plumbing, electrical, HVAC, septic, tree and garage door work in Washington towns. Across 86 of those answers, 229 of 277 citations were businesses' own websites, 40 were government sites and only 8 were directories like Angi.
What helps
- A page for each service and each town you cover
- Your reviews and how long you've been trading, on the site itself
- Your licence or registration number
- Plain words: "emergency plumber in Kent, WA, 24/7" beats a slogan
- Structured data, so the details are machine-readable

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
It reads the web, so reviews shown on your own site and on sites it trusts can help. Your own website was by far what it cited most in our checks.
Is getting into ChatGPT the same as SEO?
Mostly the same work: a clear, specific website. The difference is that ChatGPT names a few businesses, not a page of ten.
